Program Description:
Whether living on campus with a Taiwanese roommate or with a host family in Kaohsiung, linguistic and cultural immersion are the cornerstones of the Middlebury in Taiwan program.Taiwan Students with Roommates

Kaohsiung is known as Taiwan’s Harbor Capital and is located on the island’s southwest coast, sitting at the intersection of the mountains and the sea. Both the downtown and major port have gone through recent revitalizations, and the city now boasts cultural and artistic venues, Taiwan’s biggest night market, and pleasant weather throughout the year.

Our curriculum at the National Sun Yat-sen University was designed for the specific needs of high intermediate and advanced Chinese language students. All students are required to take a one-on-one content-based tutorial and an area studies class. Students also choose two elective classes from among those offered. Courses are conducted entirely in Chinese. Qualified second-semester students may, with the director’s approval, enroll in a course at the host university, and/or pursue a credit-bearing internship.

Each semester, Middlebury in Taiwan takes students on a week-long traveling seminar. Locations may vary by semester, but past seminars have included trips to New Taipei City, Green Island, Sun Moon Lake, Alishan, and Kinmen. The goals of the seminar differ, depending on the location and chosen themes. The seminar is incorporated into the program curriculum and led by Middlebury in Taiwan faculty.
